InterServer Web Hosting Review

Over the last couple of years, I have used and compared various Web Hosting companies while trying to find a decent balance between price and performance. While Interserver Web Hosting isn’t spoken about or advertised as much, I think it is an excellent service that flies under the radar, especially their WordPress Hosting and VPS services.

Interserver Web Hosting

Based in Secaucus NJ, Interserver.net has provided web hosting for 21 years. Today, they have a variety of services, with the most popular being their standard Interserver Web Hosting, Interserver VPS service, and Interserver WordPress VPS.

One of the benefits of using Interserver is their price lock guarantee. As long as you remain a paying customer, your prices will never change. There are no renewal fees, contracts, or hidden fees. Also, Interserver Web Hosting comes with free migration service, unlimited email accounts, unlimited ultra SSD Storage, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and $1.99 domain registrations.

In terms of performance, Interserver uses Litespeed instead of Apache for its standard web hosting packages. Litespeed is less taxing on memory and resources and allows your website to handle more traffic and stand up to DDOS attacks more effectively. Software such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and Magento are easy to install using the 1-click install script in CPanel.

It’s not often that a Web Host provides any additional performance enhancements and tweaks for shared hosting accounts. Furthermore, most companies try to entice people with low initial startup costs only to double or triple the price after the initial term.

Before you run to Hostgator or Bluehost simply because of their low price and name recognition, consider trying out Interserver Web Hosting first.

Interserver VPS Service

Interserver VPS, unlike Shared Hosting, gives you a set amount of resources that you don’t have to share with anyone. Also, you’ll have full access to your server so that you can perform your performance tweaks and enhancements. If you plan on running WordPress, this means more stability, speed, and better SEO scores.

VPS Hosting can get pricey, and most hosting companies offer very few options in terms of customization. Interserver takes a different approach and gives you more control in customizing your VPS package the way you want it. You can choose between 1-16 cores for only $6 each, allowing you to pay only for the resources you need and keep costs low.

Resources such as memory, storage, and data transfer get allocated when you select the number of cores you want. I run a four-core machine with 8GB of memory, 125GB SSD storage, and 4 TB of data transfer for $24 per month, not a bad deal when you compare InterServer VPS services to others on the market. The same price lock guarantee mentioned with the Interserver Web Hosting also applies to the InterServer VPS service.

As long as you’re a paying customer, your prices will never change fluctuate, and there are no contracts or renewal fees. Also, if you decide that your server needs more or fewer resources, you can easily change the configuration in your administration panel. The changes will take effect at the beginning of the next billing cycle.

Buying an Interserver VPS

There are several more options that you need to choose when ordering your VPS server, namely, the Platform, Operating System, root password, hostname, and the Control Panel software. Once you select the number of cores, you want you’ll have to configure the rest of the server settings.

Without going into much detail for each option, most people will be just fine selecting the Virtuozzo Platform, CentOS as the Image, 7 CPanel 64bit for the version, and CPanel as the control panel.

You may also choose Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and OpenSUSE images if you want, but CentOS is the most stable and secure option for a VPS server. Also, the control panel is one of the most important options on this page because it’s how you’re going to interact with your VPS server.

Control Panel

From the Control Panel drop-down menu, you have the option of selecting CPanel or Direct Admin. Additionally, in the lower right-hand corner of the page, you have the option of choosing Webuzo, which is a “free” administrative control panel. While I don’t have any experience with Direct Admin, I do with CPanel and Webuzo.

CPanel

CPanel is the most commonly used control panel. Most web hosting companies use it or have their customized version. CPanel is used to interact with your server so that you don’t have to log in and manually install and configure software, email, SSL certificates, DNS entries, databases, and many other functions.

Typically, when you order web hosting, especially shared hosting, CPanel comes bundled with it for free. However, when dealing with VPS or Dedicated servers, you’ll need to have a license to use CPanel and WHM “Web Host Manager”.

Between these two pieces of software, you’ll very seldom need to use terminal command lines to perform any actions on your server. So while there is an additional fee associated with using CPanel and WHM, it’s well worth the money, and you’re probably already familiar with it.

At Interserver, the license for CPanel and WHM is $14.50 per month, and they do the installation for you. One significant advantage of using  CPanel and WHM is that it’s quite easy to install PHP models and other software plugins such as Engintron NGINX reverse proxy server. Engintron will come in handy if you’re using the InterServer VPS for hosting WordPress and want better performance.

Webuzo

Webuzo is another admin panel that allows you to interact with your server and install and configure software and settings. It has a little more than 300 software programs that you can install with a single click, similar to CPanel’s 1-Click. If you select it while placing your order, it’ll say that it’s free, but that isn’t necessarily the case.

Interserver won’t charge you for using it, but you’ll have to SSH into your server and manually install Webuzo. After installation, you realize that to install any software, you’ll need a license that you have to purchase for $2.50/mo. I’m my case, even after buying the license, I found it difficult to set up email and some other functions working.

I’m sure that someone with more time could get it working as efficiently as CPanel, but I was eager to get my website running and didn’t want to deal with it, and ended up going with CPanel instead.

Interserver Coupon

Once you’ve selected your cores, operating system, and control panel, you’re all set. For a four-core Interserver VPS server and CPanel Admin, you can expect to pay $38.50. If you choose the Webuzo Admin, you’ll end up paying $26.50 a month – not a bad deal for VPS hosting for WordPress.

For those who’ve read this far, here are a couple of Interserver Coupon codes that you can use during checkout: Use code “PriceNab” to get Interserver Web Hosting for only $0.01 your first month.

Alternatively, you can also use code “Facebook50” to get 50% off your order for the first month for an InterServer VPS service.

InterServer VPS Performance

I already mentioned that Interserver uses Litespeed for the Web Hosting packages, but what about their VPS servers? When you purchase a VPS service, the performance tweaks and configurations are up to you.

If you’re using the Interserver VPS for WordPress, you should also install Engintron, as mentioned above. Also, consider installing Memcached or Redis for faster database queries and processes. Also, using a proper CDN such as KeyCDN in combination with Cloudflare can help speed up your website.

Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you need help setting up any of these services on your VPS server, primarily if you’ve purchased using our links.
