Description

Some may prefer a home gym setup like the Powerline P2X Home Gym over a power rack or functional trainer. If you have limited space, or your workout routine is focused around isolation movements, a home gym might be what you’re looking for.

Home gyms use pulley systems similar to functional trainers, but provide more exercise variations from a seated position. With the Powerline P2X home gym, there are about 22 exercises available to you, and even more, if you get a little creative. That is the benefit of pulley machine-based exercise equipment, you’re able to use strict form and target muscle groups directly.

Exercise Selection

Chest

The Powerline P2X Home Gym allows the user to target most, if not all, major muscle groups. For the chest, the P2X has a built-in chest press station with neutral and pronated grips similar to what you would find on commercial-grade machines in a gym. Those two hand positions should provide a great deal of activation of the full pectorial muscles; however, you can use stirrup or “D-ring” handles on the pulley system for incline and decline movements. With the handles, you’ll not only be able to do pressing movements but you’re also able to do fly movements – everything the chest needs.

Back

The back is one of my favorite body parts to work and the P2X home gym is not lacking in exercise selection. You can target your back in several different ways. First, you can use the chest press station by turning around and performing seated rows using various hand positions. This is probably the best way to activate the back muscles because it allows you to use the most amount of weight. Also, in that same position, you can perform lat-pulldowns in various different ways with the included lat-pulldown bar.

You could also use the D-ring handles mentioned above on the pulley machine to do one-armed rows, or sit on the floor and perform rows. Exercise machines like the Powerline P2X home gym are often underused because they’re used in a textbook manner. However, the art of resistance training is finding a way to target muscles in as many ways as possible – safely.

Legs

The Powerline P2X home gym comes with an optional leg press attachment that has a 2:1 ratio. This means that selecting 60lbs on the weight stack gives you 120lbs of resistance. The leg press is wide enough for you to use various foot placements to target different areas of the leg, and being that it is linear, it is a lot easier on the lower back. The P2X also has a seated leg curl station.

Other exercises

You can also work your biceps, triceps, and abdominals using the pulley system in combination with various attachments. However, I would encourage anyone that wants a home gym to also invest in a barbell or dumbbell set as some exercises are better performed with free weights.

My Opinion on the Powerline P2X Home Gym

The P2X Home gym offers a ton of exercise variation in a relatively small footprint. Even with the leg press attachment, you’ll find that it doesn’t take up too much space. It certainly takes up less space and is more manageable than a functional trainer or a power rack with barbells, benches, and Olympic bars.

With that said, you need to look at your long term fitness goals to determine if this home gym is right for you. At a price of $1049, you can get the base station without the leg press attachment and add-ons. That is a lot of money to spend if this machine is just going to sit around and collect dust.

If your goal is to stay active, maintain muscle, tone, or do some rehabilitation, the P2X home gym is worth every penny. However, if you’re goals are more into strength training or building considerable muscle mass, I would recommend getting a power rack or squat stand and focus your training on compound movements.
