Powerline P2X Home Gym

Some people may prefer a home gym setup like the Powerline P2X Home Gym over a power rack or functional trainer depending on their specific fitness goals or available space. Home gyms use a pulley system similar to functional trainers, but provide more exercise variations from a seated position. They also tend to have more attachments that allow compound movements such as leg presses.

Powerline P2X Home Gym

Exercise Selection

Chest

The Powerline P2X Home Gym allows the user to target most, if not all, major muscle groups. For the chest, the P2X provides both a neutral and pronated grip for chest presses as you would find on commercial-grade machines in a gym. Those two hand positions should provide a great deal of activation for the full pectorial; however, you can use stirrup or “D-ring” handles on the pulley system for incline and decline movements.

Back

Back exercises on the P2X home gym can be accomplished in several different ways. First, you can use the same handles from the chest press to perform seated rows with a neutral and supine grip. This is probably the best way to activate the back muscles for thickness because it allows you to use the most weight. In that same position, you can perform lat-pulldowns in various different ways if you have the supported attachments.

You may also use the D-ring handles on the pulley machine to do one-armed rows or sit on the floor and perform rows. Exercise machines like the Powerline P2X home gym are often underused because they are used in a textbook manner, but the art of resistance training is finding a way to perform exercises in as many ways as you can safely.

Legs

The Powerline P2X home gym comes with a leg press attachment that has a 2:1 ratio. This means when you select 60lbs on the weight stack, you’re actually pressing 120lbs. The leg press is wide enough for you to use various foot placements to target different areas of the leg. Being that it is linear, it is a lot easier on the lower back.

The P2X also has a leg curl and extension attachment. The leg curl is standing and not lying, but you’ll rarely find a lying leg curl on a home gym.

Other exercises

You can also work your biceps, triceps, and abdominals using the pulley system in combination with various attachments. Keep in mind that exercises on a home gym will not be as smooth as exercises performed on commercial gym equipment. In fact, I would encourage anyone that wants a home gym to also invest in a barbell or dumbbell set, as some exercises are better performed with free weights.

My Opinion on the Powerline P2X Home Gym

The P2X Home gym offers a ton of exercise variation in a relatively small footprint. Even with the leg press attachment, you’ll find that it doesn’t take up too much space. The P2X home gym gives those with limited space, that want a home gym, all the tools to get an excellent workout at home.

With that said, you need to look at your long term fitness goals to determine if this home gym is right for you. I’ve always considered these home gyms as a way to stay active, but not a great option if your goal is to build a lot of muscle or be as strong as possible. Home gyms tend to have a limited range of motion due to the short pulley system, and because most exercises are seated, you miss out on strengthening stabilizing muscles.

You can, of course, get the P2X Home Gym without the leg press. If it were me, I’d save the $300 on the leg press and use that money to purchase a power rack. You may or may not have the space to have both, but if you do, you can have the benefits of a home gym setup that covers both compound and isolation exercises.
