|Price history for Xiaomi MI Watch|
The Xiaomi Mi Watch is a companion smartwatch for Android smartphones that has a similar Apple Watch design. Currently, only the Chinese version is available. If a Global version ever releases, the Xiaomi Mi Watch and any subsequent generations could be a serious contender to all smartwatch manufacturers.
What you get
To be fair, the Xiaomi Mi Watch does look very similar to the Apple Watch, and many simply dismissed it as a glorified knockoff. However, from my perspective, Android users also deserve a squared style smartwatch with a beautiful design and display. What should a squared Android smartwatch look like if not this? And, to be fair, Apple is not the first company to produce a watch with a squared design.
Weight only 55g, the Xiaomi Mi Watch is slightly heavier than the Apple Watch, but it is also on par or lighter than other Android smartwatches on the market. It’s running the latest Snapdragon 3100 processor and features a beautiful 1.78″ AMOLED display running a resolution of 368 x 448.
Its aluminum frame, sharp edges, gorilla glass 3, a rotating crown, a dedicated shortcut button, and a ceramic back with an integrated always-on heart rate monitor are the first things that pop out at you when you first pick up the Mi Watch. Of course, there have been other “copies” of the Apple Watch, such as the LEMFO LEM 10, which can’t be taken seriously due to its size, OS, and hardware. From an Android users’ perspective, when comparing a LEM 10 with a Mi Watch, it’s easy to see why this is a very exciting time.
Also, the Xiaomi Mi Watch runs the latest WearOS with the Xiaomi MIUI Skin. If you’ve installed any of the custom MIUI ROMs or launchers on your smartphone, you know that MIUI offers one of the most beautiful skins for the Android system.
Battery & Performance
The Mi Watch features the Snapdragon 3100 processor clocked at 1.25ghz and a 570mAH battery. Battery usage is rated at 36 hours but it cannot be tested in the USA as it isn’t compatible with our carriers. Using it as a Bluetooth only device gets closer to 48 hours of usage. Also, if you’re in the USA, the NFC feature will not work here. With 1GB of ram and 8GB of storage, the Xiaomi Mi Watch is quick and responsive for the applications that come loaded.
There aren’t very many controls on the Mi Watch but just like any Android device, it is intuitive. You can use the rotating crown to wake the watch, launches the app drawer, and you can quickly scroll through content. Swiping to the left of the home screen brings up the step counter, heart-rate monitor, Mi account, and fitness running app. Swiping right of the home screen takes you to your calendar and notifications.
Additional features include an always-on display, tap or raise-to-wake, and an assistant. Basically, all of the functions you would expect from a WearOS smartwatch is there except the Google Play Store. At this time, you’re limited to Xiaomi’s alternative store that offers apps that are specifically optimized for the Mi Watch. The selection isn’t bad and most of the popular social media apps are available. However, if you’re coming from a different WearOS device, you probably won’t be able to keep all of your apps.
Additionally, English and Chinese are the only two languages available right now. If your smartphone is set to English, the Mi Watch will go through the setup process in English. However, you’ll still find a lot of Chinese characters throughout the OS.
The Xiaomi Mi Watch features heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen, sleep monitoring, and body energy monitoring. Additionally, it has 10 exercises “sports modes” that you can perform and track. Also, it has 5ATM (up to 50 meters) water resistance. GPS, GLONASS, and BEIDOU are built-in so that you can track distance and use navigation. As a fitness device/tracker, the Mi Watch is promising but we need a Global Version with a Google Play Store.
Xiaomi Mi Watch
Well, if you’re in China or know the Chinese language, purchasing a Xiaomi Mi Watch might be worth it. However, I think the rest of us might need to wait if a Global version comes to the market. If it doesn’t, that would be a shame and possibly an epic fail of a smartwatch that has so much potential.
